KickaPoo State Recreation Area

🍁 40th Anniversary • Maine Bound 🍁

As our Changing Leaves 40th Anniversary adventure carried us northward toward Wisconsin, we found ourselves with a few unhurried days before arriving at our destination. It was the perfect opportunity to pause, breathe, and discover one of Illinois’ finest natural treasures — the Kickapoo State Recreation Area in Oakwood, Illinois.

Kickapoo State Recreation Area — a beautifully wooded campsite with generous privacy

What a remarkable setting this proved to be. Our campsite was spacious and wonderfully private — a back-in configuration that positioned us facing the forest rather than our neighbors, a thoughtful arrangement that speaks to the park’s design philosophy. We dearly enjoy the camaraderie of fellow RV travelers, yet there is something equally restorative about having the quiet of the trees all to oneself at the close of a long day on the road.

After the exhilarating pace of the preceding days, settling in here for a few nights was precisely what we needed. The park offered little traffic, ample stillness, and the kind of unhurried atmosphere that invites genuine rest. We embraced it fully.

Sometimes the finest gift a journey can offer is permission to slow down — to let the forest hold you still for a while before the road calls again.

During our evening walks through the park, we had the pleasure of encountering a few of the area’s local residents — nature’s own welcoming committee.

And on our final morning, as we were preparing to pull out and continue north, we were gifted with one last, gentle surprise — a sweet family gathered at the forest’s edge, enjoying their breakfast in the early light. It was the kind of parting moment that stays with you long after the wheels are rolling again.

If your travels ever bring you through the Oakwood, Illinois area, Kickapoo State Recreation Area is an absolute must. The bathhouse facilities were immaculate, with ample hot water — a detail that road travelers know to appreciate more than most. The grounds are beautifully maintained, the privacy is exceptional, and the natural surroundings are simply stunning. We cannot recommend it highly enough. Thank you for following along on this journey with us — each stop, each quiet morning, and each unexpected encounter makes this 40th Anniversary road trip all the more meaningful. With gratitude, Nancy.

Onward to Oshkosh, and into autumn’s golden light. 🍂
