π NEW ADVENTURE CONTINUES π
South Shore Wine Company

π 40th Anniversary β’ Maine Bound π
The road carried us from Ohio into Pennsylvania on a day measured more by miles than by moments β yet as the afternoon light softened into early evening, we found ourselves arriving at a stop that would quickly become one of the most cherished of our entire journey. Tucked along the southern shore of Lake Erie in the charming borough of North East, Pennsylvania, our Harvest Hosts reservation had led us somewhere quietly extraordinary: the storied grounds of South Shore Wine Company.
We had not known quite what to expect, yet from the moment we turned off Route 89 and caught our first glimpse of the property, it was clear that this evening would be anything but ordinary.

A Toast in a Historic Stone Cavern
South Shore Wine Company is a treasure within Pennsylvania’s celebrated Lake Erie AVA wine region β and its story is as rich as the wines it pours. The property’s history stretches back to the nineteenth century, and in 2007 the Mazza family β the respected stewards behind Mazza Vineyards, Mazza Chautauqua Cellars, and Five & 20 Spirits & Brewing β purchased and lovingly restored the historic estate, breathing new life into one of Erie County’s most significant viticultural landmarks.
What awaits visitors inside is nothing short of breathtaking. The tasting room is housed within a Civil Warβera stone cavern wine cellar, constructed in the 1860s in the tradition of classic French wine caves. The vaulted stone walls, cool and ancient, create an atmosphere that is at once dramatic and deeply intimate β a setting that seems to hold the memory of every celebration that has ever unfolded within it. It is, as the winery’s own description so aptly puts it, an Instagrammable setting in the truest sense, though no photograph can fully capture the feeling of standing within it.

The wines themselves are crafted to celebrate. South Shore specializes in sparkling wines produced through traditional, contemporary, and experimental methods, alongside a selection of delicately sweet bottles and lesser-known but thoroughly impressive emerging varietals. The philosophy here is a simple and joyful one: whether marking a milestone, a major accomplishment, or simply the gift of an ordinary Monday, every occasion calls for a noteworthy bottle of wine. During our visit, we discovered that the winery hosts Sparkling Hours every Thursday and Friday β offering a dollar off sparkling wines by the glass β as well as the delightful Mazzmosa Weekends each Saturday and Sunday. A beautifully renovated portion of the original South Shore Inn now serves as a banquet hall for small gatherings and private events. More information about their offerings and wines can be found at enjoymazza.com.
There is something singularly magical about raising a glass of sparkling wine beneath a vaulted ceiling of hand-laid Civil Warβera stone β as though the very walls hold the memory of every celebration that came before, and quietly invite you to add your own.
A Harvest Hosts Gem
It is one of the quiet rewards of traveling with Harvest Hosts β the way an unremarkable stretch of highway can deposit you, quite unexpectedly, at a place of genuine beauty and character. South Shore Wine Company is precisely that kind of discovery: the sort of stop that transforms a transit day into something memorable. We had planned to simply rest for the evening; instead, we found ourselves lingering over glasses of sparkling wine in a nineteenth-century stone cavern, grateful for every mile that had brought us here.
This is, at its heart, what our 40th anniversary journey has always been about β not merely the destination of Maine’s brilliant autumn foliage, but the willingness to be surprised by what lies along the way. South Shore Wine Company reminded us, beautifully, that the road itself is the gift.

We retired that evening with full hearts and the pleasant weight of an unexpected discovery. Tomorrow, the road northward continues β and if South Shore Wine Company is any indication of what awaits us, Maine cannot come soon enough.
Until the next bend in the roadβ¦
